Nasyam is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy

Nasya therapy involves administering medicated oil or herbal decoction through the nostrils of the patient. It is among one of the five detoxifying Ayurveda therapies called Panchakarma. Nasyam detoxifies and cures diseases in the area of the head and neck including sinusitis, migraine, and other respiratory problems.

Procedure

  • At first, gentle face massage was done with tailam followed by mild steam fomentation (swedan) over face and forehead.
  • Then nasya karma was performed using medicated oil.
  • The patient was positioned in supine posture with the head slightly extended.
  • Then oil drop in each nostrils were instilled and the patient was instructed to inhale gently.
  • When medicine reached the throat and neck region the patient was instructed to spit out the discharge through mouth, avoid swallowing followed by dhoomapana.
