Navarakizhi, also known as Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda, is a therapeutic Ayurvedic massage from Kerala that uses warm poultices of medicated rice. The treatment is designed to induce sweating, nourish the body, strengthen muscles, and rejuvenate the nervous system.
A decoction is prepared by boiling herbs which should be choosen according to patients condition.
The special Navara rice is cooked with a portion of the herbal decoction and milk until it becomes a soft, mushy mixture.
The cooked rice is divided and tied securely into multiple cloth bags (kizhi).
The treatment begins with a light application of medicated oil over the patient's body to prepare the skin and muscles.
The therapist continuously dips the warm rice boluses into the second portion of the herbal milk mixture, which is kept heated.
The therapist applies the warm boluses to the patient's body in rhythmic, massage-like strokes. They may focus on specific affected areas or cover the entire body.
The warmth from the boluses opens the skin's pores, promoting perspiration and allowing the medicinal properties of the herbs and rice to be absorbed.
When a bolus cools down, it is replaced with a warmer one to ensure a continuous flow of heat and medicine.
A single session typically lasts between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the patient's condition.
After the massage, the patient's body is gently wiped to remove any excess oil and rice.
The patient is advised to rest for a while to allow their body to fully absorb the therapeutic benefits.
Navarakizhi is a deeply nourishing and therapeutic Ayurvedic treatment that harnesses the healing power of Navara rice, herbal decoctions, and milk to promote muscle strength, joint health, and overall well-being. It is a holistic therapy that supports both physical and mental health, making it an essential part of Ayurvedic wellness practices.
