Udwarthanam is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment involving a vigorous, deep-tissue massage with herbal powders, performed in an upward direction, against the direction of hair growth, to promote detoxification, improve circulation and reduce fat accumulation.
The patient is ideally prepared by evacuating the bowels and bladder and should have an empty stomach.
Application of Powder/Paste : Medicated herbal powders or pastes are applied to the body.
Upward Massage: The therapist performs firm, rhythmic strokes in an upward direction, opposite to the natural direction of body hair growth (Pratiloma Gati).
Body Positions: The massage is carried out in various positions, typically including supine (lying on the back), prone (lying on the stomach), and lateral (lying on the side).
Duration: A session typically lasts for 45 to 60 minutes.
Cleansing: After the massage, the body is wiped clean to remove the powder or paste.
